Self-assembly of colloidal diamond and related structures
A long-standing challenge in 3D photonics has been the self-assembly of colloidal crystals with a cubic diamond symmetry. Over the past several years, we have developed several distinct strategies to realize these structures using novel colloidal building blocks and tailored assembly pathways. In this seminar, I will provide an overview of the field and present three successful approaches to forming colloidal diamond. Finally, I will discuss the current prospects and remaining challenges for fabricating 3D photonic crystals with a functional band gap.
