Eisenstein series and equidistribution

Quantum chaos predicts that high energy eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a negatively curved surface should exhibit chaotic behavior.  For the modular surface SL_2(Z)H, the Laplace eigenfunctions also have deep arithmetical meaning.  The Eisenstein series are a continuous family of eigenfunctions that can be written explicitly and are relatively more tractable to study.  I will survey the properties of these Eisenstein series and discuss some results establishing various forms of equidistribution which are in line with quantum chaos.
