Melting in Two Dimensions

The melting of a solid composed of sufficiently hard particles in two dimensions is a two-step process, involving successive transitions from the solid to the hexatic phase, and from the hexatic to the liquid phase, as the global density decreases. I will discuss several  intriguing aspects of these phase transitions in both passive and active bidimensional systems. Special attention will be given to the  analysis of dislocations and disclinations, as well as the mechanisms  leading to motility-induced phase separation in active systems.
