Title
 "Efficient heat engines are powerless: Universal trade-off relation between current and dissipation”

Thermodynamics, which governs the change of states and associated energy transfer in macroscopic systems, is one of the most well established fields in modern science.  Nevertheless there still remain a number of unsolved questions closely related to thermodynamics.  Here we report a solution (for a large class of physical systems) of a long standing problem about the efficiency and power of heat engines, namely, whether it is possible to build a heat engine with nonvanishing power which attains the Carnot efficiency.

For a general thermodynamic system described as a Markov process, we prove an inequality which shows that nonvanishing heat current inevitably induces dissipation. This leads to a trade-off relation between efficiency and power, with which we establish that a heat engine with nonvanishing power never attains the Carnot efficiency. Our theory applies to systems arbitrarily far from equilibrium, and does not assume any specific symmetry of the model.
