“Order and Information out of Equilibrium”
Measuring entropy-like quantities in many-body non-equilibrium systems is hampered by lack of knowledge about the ensemble of accessible microstates and their probabilities. I will describe techniques borrowed from Information Theory which may be employed to estimate the Shannon entropy of some non-equilibrium models. I will provide numerical evidence that this quantity shows singular behavior at phase transitions, can be used to estimate correlation lengths and some critical exponents, even when the correlations in the systems are unclear. I will discuss discretization of continuous systems, and address sampling issues which can cause inaccuracy.
