“Simple mechanobiological models for tissue growth and regeneration”

Tissue regeneration after fracture or injury is controlled by biochemical and physical factors. Some aspects of this phenomenon can be described by simple equations relating the eigenstrain-rate of the tissue to a chemical potential and the volumetric stress in the tissue. In particular, surface tension at the growth front influences the growth kinetics and may lead to pattern generation and even to metastable states. The latter can be particularly important in delayed fracture healing or for the growth of metastases in cancer. These mathematical models are investigated with simple geometric boundary conditions and predictions compared to in-vitro tissue growth experiments.
