From atoms to fluids - the fluctuation regime
In the sixth problem he proposed at the ICM in 1900, Hilbert suggested to use the Boltzmann equation as an intermediate step to understand the transition from the atomistic description to continuous models of fluid mechanics. More than one century later, there are still big issues to implement this program, but in the specific case of small fluctuations around a global equilibrium, we recently got a first complete picture.
