Instability of Metals under Strong Electron–Phonon Interaction and the Prospect of Room-Temperature Superconductivity
In this talk I will show that thermal equilibrium between conduction electrons and phonons becomes kinetically unstable once the electron–phonon coupling exceeds a threshold. This instability sets a fundamental upper bound on the superconducting transition temperature. A key implication is that room-temperature superconductivity is within reach, but only in hydrogen-based compounds.
